Missionary Updates (10/1/13)

Posted by on Oct 1, 2013 in Abramovich, Enright, EventReport, Mission: Beyond our Community, Phillips, Quigg, Rambo, Vanderhoof, Walters | 0 comments

Each October as we join Christians everywhere on World Communion Sunday, we think that it is appropriate to update you on the work of the global missionaries that we help to support with our prayers and benevolence offerings. PUMC has always been a missional church.
Presently, we divide your missions dollars among 45 ministries. Missions are an inherent part of our faith. Our missions prayers, financial support, and volunteer time start at the doors of PUMC and extend locally, nationally, and throughout the world.  When we care for the weakest and most vulnerable among us, it is as if we were caring for Jesus himself.
We work to improve their quality of life in a myriad of ways because we believe it is an imperative for disciples of Jesus Christ. We act because we are called by our profession of faith to participate in the ongoing transformation of the world that God desires for all of His children to flourish. We act because when we see the faces of the least of these, we see the face of Jesus.

After 35 years in Congo, David and Lorene are retiring. They are thrilled that what began as a Seminary and Women’s School in Congo has now grown to become the Katanga Methodist University with six Congolese PhDs on the faculty.

Since their families have been missionaries in Congo since 1936, we’re sure that although David and Lorene are officially retired, they will be led to stay involved in Congo, and the ministries there.

David and Lorene ask for your prayers for the Church in Congo and for the Congolese people.

Joy writes that in five years Mango Ministries has grown by leaps and bounds. They now have four staff and volunteers living in South Sudan working on Community Health and Development, and teaching Biblical Storytelling. (Many in South Sudan are illiterate) They have also sent six medical teams with medicine and supplies from Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, to South Sudan. After two years of independence, insecurity and uncertainty are still the norm in South Sudan.

Joy thanks you for being so faithful with your prayers, support, and interest in the work of God in South Sudan.

Steve and Gail write that the “Wings of the Morning” Caravan arrived in D.R. Congo on schedule and has been performing marvelously. Gaston, the pilot, has been welcomed at every stop in typical African fashion. Sometimes there have been thousands of people singing, dancing, and praying, in celebration of the new airplane. What a wonderful sight that must be! Watch the video.  The Quiggs write, “None of our work would be possible without you as our partners. We send our thanks and gratitude one thousand times over.”
